Marin General Hospital has introduced a new community program, “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls”, an innovative fall prevention course for those in the Marin community who are concerned about falls; interested in learning exercises that will improve their balance; or who may have restricted activities because of falling concerns. Across the country, and in Marin County, falls are the leading cause of fractures, hospital admissions, and deaths among older adults. A serious fall may have a significant effect on a senior’s health and independence. Many falls can actually be prevented with education, healthy lifestyle choices, and safety modifications in the home.

This course will help cover all aspects of fall prevention and offer simple strategies to help seniors prevent falling and improve their balance.”

A Matter of Balance participants will attend eight, two-hour group sessions. Trained volunteer coaches will lead up to 15 individuals through group discussions where participants learn: safe and simple exercises to promote strength, flexibility and balance; problem solving strategies to address habits and behaviors; lifestyle changes to promote safety; and, innovative ways to create a safer home environment.

Marin General Hospital’s  first A Matter of Balance program will be offered at the Presbyterian Church of Novato beginning  Monday, November 20. Class size is limited to 15 and a $20 materials fee is requested. For more information on “A Matter of Balance” or to register for a class, please contact Beverly Winsor, Program Coordinator, at injuryprevention@maringeneral.org or 1-415-993-2557.
