This past month, the CDC released a report that suicide rates have increased across the US by 25% from 1999-2016, by 30% or more in 25 states, making it a leading cause of death in the US. This is one of the steepest rises since the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Here in Marin, we have also seen a rise in suicides among both youth and adults. Out of rising concern and in an effort to increase public awareness, September 7-13 has been declared National Suicide Prevention Week.

  • What are some of the causes and risk factors for suicide?
  • How can I become better at detecting and responding to suicide risk?
  • What are some of the prevention strategies to reduce suicide and suicide risk?

Learn about programs being developed and already rolling out to improve suicide risk assessment and prevention.

SPEAKER:  Spend an evening with Dr. Adam Nelson, local psychiatrist in private practice in Mill Valley to discuss and find answers to these questions. Dr. Nelson is a former chair of the Department of Psychiatry, former Medical Director of the Inpatient Unit, the Partial Hospital and Intensive Outpatient Programs for the Department of Behavioral Health at Marin General Hospital.
